In cases where an expansion joint passes through a continuous cantilever slab, the two adjacent slabs need to be separated with an expansion joint. This allows for the 2 buildings to move independently and not create torsional cracks and deformations on the cantilever slender slabs.

At the same time, instead of completely separating the cantilever slabs and allowing for differential deformations ( creating problems on the top finishes i.e. tiles ), one can use this construction detail to ensure that the two will both deform together, plus allowing for horizontal independent building movements.

This detail shows in a slab reinforcement plan view the location of such expansion joints together with a cross section detailing the joint.

It is very common and usual phenomenon, in large buildings to have an expansion joint passing through cantilever slabs. This detail will come in handy in many cases and save every engineer valuable time in preparing drawings.
